The elements

I read once in a child development book that it was important to expose your child to all different kinds of weather—hot, cold, sunny, rainy, etc. Something like they need to learn that the days are different and how to adapt to different weather—like you weren’t doing anybody any favors keeping them entirely indoors on mildly uncomfortable days. The year I spent hanging out with Colin, we definitely braved the Wisconsin elements…sledding on ‘the mound’ on snowy days (even with the never-ending battle to put on snow pants!)…trips to see the monkeys at the zoo on sunny days…and my favorite, walks in the rain to the little library and our favorite cafĂ©.

This morning, I had to brave the Brussels elements…namely rain. Before 10:30 AM, I had traversed half the city on foot in the drizzle…and then back to the office this afternoon in the rain…all the while thinking “it is good to expose yourself to the elements…” If it applies to 2 year olds, it must also apply to….errr….twenty year olds, right? Ha!

I was going to say I think that photo is staged because you look way too posh to be braving the elements. :)

But, maybe that's the difference between the US and Europe...posh elements. Because, really, if you were to see me doing the same thing here, it would be reminiscent of river rats!!
