So the good news is that it looks like the movers will be dropping off my stuff on Thursday. Whoohoo! In Maslow's hierarchy of needs, I’m psyched to be checking off the physiological need for shelter.
Not that I haven’t been taken care of…for example, I’ll be staying with one of my dear friends here in Brussels for the next two nights. Isn’t that lovely? There were no hotel rooms in the area for less than 500 Euro a night (and given my company’s current financial situation, I couldn’t really imagine expensing that with a straight face!), so I asked a friend. She didn’t hesitate before saying yes, even though she has a very busy week.
We’ve just started talking about ‘community’ at the Well--it’s the theme for the month. And God didn’t waste any time before challenging me to lean into it a bit.
I was thinking about how sometimes, for me at least, it’s easier to ask for help with spiritual needs (like ‘can you pray for me?’) than felt needs I’m experiencing (like ‘can I crash on your futon?’) But two things come to mind: 1) What if a step towards answering our spiritual needs comes through asking for help with some of the seemingly simpler needs in our lives? And 2) What if one of the most basic ways for our neighbors to see the Light of the World is when they see us caring for each other and “making gentle the life of this world”* in everyday ways? Maybe?

Makes perfect sense, especially because Jesus points us to helping others with their material needs, not their spiritual ones. Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, comfort those in prison, etc. Do what WE can, so he can do what HE can!
