Showing Up

I drove to Chicago on Friday to spend the weekend in Chicago with Andrea and Ben. As usual, we had a great time hanging out…in spite of some crazy weather. It seriously snowed all day Saturday (this after a beautiful spring day on Friday)! None the less, we wandered around Millennium Park and warmed up in the giant Michigan Avenue Nordstrom’s store.

Our plans for the weekend included the semi-annual-occasional running of the Shamrock Shuffle 8K, a tradition we started several years ago. When we woke up on Sunday morning, it was freezing raining. Drea and I looked at each other, briefly considering coffee and blankets, instead of Gatorade and running shoes, but then unanimously decided to ‘tape up’ and head to the race. And by the time we got to the start, the rain had stopped. It was chilly and windy, but nothing a little run/walk/shuffle with over 25,000 others couldn’t overcome. It was so great! We were so glad we did it! We hadn’t trained at all, but Drea had a good race. I was slow as molasses, but as ever, Eminem got me across the finish line strong (Lose Yourself is my ‘go-to’ song).

Post-race, Drea and I had a good conversation about how showing up at the start line is really half the battle, you know? It would have been cozier to stay under the covers, it would have been easier to declare it too cold and windy to go on…but the satisfaction of going for it was so encouraging to both of us as we seek to journey on along our real-life paths.

p.s. how do you like the Smurf hat? good look for me, huh?

Rasmus and I did our first outdoor run of the year on Monday round the canals... it was such a beautifully spring day that we were emailing each other all day about wanting to go for a run and left work early to fit it in before it got dark! I hoping this enthusiasm lasts for the rest of the year ;)
