Our friend Mike Dempsey is leaving Detroit for awhile and moving to Baghdad to put his urban planning skills to good use there. Here's what Crain's Detroit Business had to say (thanks Liv, for passing along!):

Some wags in the local development community are commenting that only in Detroit would someone like Michael Dempsey, project manager for the Detroit Economic Growth Corp, see a job in Baghdad as a step up. Dempsey has taken a post with North Carolina-based RTI International (which has a regional office in Ann Arbor) and is moving to Baghdad later this month as an urban planning adviser with the Iraq Local Governance Program.
Mike Dempsey has been working on the frontline in Detroit and his commitment to the City and its people are truly remarkable. It's a little befuddling to imagine him away from the 'hood, but it smells of something wild that will no doubt point to something bigger than us.
