I was chatting with Rachel last night about this, that and the other thing, including the economic craziness and automaker uncertainty hanging around metro-Detroit right now. And Rachie reminded me that a silver lining to these kind of clouds is that you often see the best of people come out…challenging times draw people together…force people to depend on one another…and she helped me catch a glimpse of how the spirit of God is at work, even in the middle of all that, well, blech!
Reminded me of another message from the Mars Hill series on Philippians. The series continues to hit home for me in a bunch of ways, but what I want to share with you, especially my dear ones in the D-E-T, is this idea of ‘shining like stars’ found in Philippians 2:12-18.
Rob Bell talks about what it means to do everything without grumbling and to shine like stars. He reminds us that Paul is teaching the Philippians (and us) that “Some things are difficult, but it is an invitation to become a more honest, truthful, filled-with-wonder kind of person…and when we go through difficult things we are invited to keep going and get through it because on the other side we’ll become a new kind of person…” (and dare I add, a new kind of community?)
I think we become that new kind of person first when we are reconciled to God through Jesus…and then we get the chance to shine like stars in the universe, reflecting the light, joy, hope and love of Christ to the world. May God use these difficult times to His glory…may He use you...shine on my sweet friends!
